Did you know that there's a simple device you can use in boat anchoring that can take the strain off your costly deck cleats and anchor windlass, save your hull from scrapes and gouges of anchor chain, and make for a quieter night "on the hook?" Read on to learn about one of the most underused pieces of anchor gear on boats today.
Imagine that you have just dropped your anchor on all-chain anchor rode inside a pristine cove after a great day of sailboat cruising. You and your crew have set the hook and are settled into the cockpit for a round or two of sailor's brew.
Soon, the sun sets, you have a great meal of fresh-caught fish and hot, homemade bread. After some relaxed conversation about the day's events and plans for the next day's sail, you and your weary crew retire for the night. In moments, all of you are sound asleep...and then it starts....
First as groan, then a scraping sound. Then a jerking, loud popping noise as the boat begins to sway back and forth and pull on her anchor chain. The wind has filled in, the boat begins a dance around the anchor. That chain saws, squeaks, and jerks against the hull like a lassoed wild mustang! And those sounds transmit like amplified speakers down into the cabin.
If you've ever experienced this nightmare, it can drive you batty and make you want to jump ship. But you can solve this problem in a "New York moment" with a simple, cheap, make-it-yourself device called an anchor snubber.
An anchor snubber will work all day and night to:
- relieve the strain on deck cleats and anchor windlass
- keep your chain or rope rode from rubbing on your sailboat hull
- give you peace and quiet like no other anchor device
- keep tension off of your costly anchor chain or anchor rope
Make up your own super efficient anchor snubber now so that it will be ready to use whenever you drop your anchor. There are many variations of anchor snubbers. Here are the steps to make the super strong bridle anchor snubber:
Tools and Prep-Steps:
- (2) 12-foot lengths of 3-strand nylon line (same diameter as your bow docking lines)
- 2 stainless steel thimbles
- 1 galvanized shackle (same size as used on your anchor rode)
- 1 oversized galvanized shackle
Splice a 1-foot-diameter eye into one end of each line. Splice an eye around a thimble (teardrop shaped liner) onto each of the other ends. Attach both "thimbled" eyes to the oversized shackle. Stow your snubber, ready for instant use when you need it.
How to Use Your Anchor Snubber:
- Drop your anchor, set it deep into the seabed, and make sure you are holding.
- Pass one large eye of the snubber beneath the legs of each bow cleat. Pull the eye through the legs and drape it over the cleat horns.
- Use the second, regular-sized shackle to shackle the large oversized shackle end of the snubber to the chain, about 10 feet down the chain from the bow roller.
- Ease the chain rode out by hand or with the windlass until the bridle takes all strain. You should see a visible bend in the chain as it becomes slack.
- Wrap chafing gear (split garden or fire hose, split PVC tube, strips of canvas) around the bridle lines where they rub the edge of the boat deck or inside the boat chocks to protect the line from chafe.
Now, when that wind picks up at night, your soft rope anchor snubber will take the strain instead of your noisy, creaky anchor chain.

Is it necessary to use a mono or fluorocarbon leader to braided line, mainly Power Pro? If so any advice on the burden of proof, I will use 15 or 20 lb Power Pro Moss
The two times that a leader is more important is when you want to go a bit more "stealth" to avoid scaring the fish and when the structure of intensive fishing and the chance of hanging on the is less common. With Mono / Fluro leader (of least resistance LB) the leader of your bust so you do not have to cut the expensive braided line. TU BC.
