Head Tennis
One of the most fun techniques from all the tennis techniques is possibly overhead smash. This is the shot where you can unleash everything you have. I personally feel there is this sense of satisfaction every time I do it. Overhead smash is one of the tennis techniques that are similar to serve but easier to do. This is because you usually do not need to do it from outside the court as serve do, therefore easier to aim.
Here are the steps to unleash your full power:
1. Wait until the ball is above your head
The name tells you. It starts with 'overhead' which means you will need for a lob ball. It does not mean that you need to position yourself directly below the ball though. In fact it is hard for all tennis techniques to hit the ball that is directly above you, even though it is not impossible. So as the ball fall down, make sure that the ball is falling in front of you by a little. Remember the feeling when you do a serve? Yes, it is similar to that.
2. Aim
In all tennis techniques you need to aim first before you hit. When you are doing overhead smash, the aim process is a bit tricky. When you see the ball is suitable for overhead smash and you decide to do it, you need to look at the enemy and aim instantly while at the same time running towards the ball. Usually what happen to me is I take a glance, run towards the ball, reach the position, and take a second glance of the opponent position. The second glance is for me to confirm the spot I am going to aim, where the first glance is when you aim for the first time. Aim for the empty spot deep in the court of course.
3. Prepare to hit
Now that you already position yourself in a comfortable position, you need to pull your racquet behind, turn your body sideway just as you are going to hit a serve with one of your leg in front and the other behind, and put your weight on your leg that is positioned behind. Turning your body sideway will make it easier to transfer your weight to your front leg and most tennis techniques depends on weight transfer. It also helps to point at the ball with your off hand and you also need to keep looking at the ball. Well after all we do not want to prepare all those things just to miss the ball when hitting.
4. Hit with all your might!
Very straight forward here, you just swing your hand as if you do a serve. You can try to put all your power here, but beware that will make your aim off. So if you are trying to use all your power, it is recommended that you aim to the center a bit to complement your accuracy. Most of the times you do not need to worry whether your opponent can hit back or not, unless your opponent is few levels above you.
There you go! Now you just need to put it into practice. In all tennis techniques, what important is that you do it right. You can always put more power into any tennis techniques when you can hit them properly and consistently.

how fast does the head of a tennis racket travel during a serve?
If Andy Roddick can hit serves at 150mph+, how fast does the head of the racket have to be travelling to give the ball that much velocity. Given that the ball has no horizontal momentum at the instant it is hit by the racket, at what speed must the racket head be travelling to send the ball away at over 150mph?
It would have to travel at least half as fast as the velocity of the ball. I would estimate it is traveling faster though; probably in the neighborhood of 90 mph.
